Sites to behold
There are more than 1,100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the planet. And now a couple more, thanks to 34 recently announced additions to the 2020/21 roster.
Newly inscribed to this list of
“places with outstanding universal value” range from fortified cities to endangered wilderness areas. There’s the historic limestone city of As-Salt in Jordan. The Trans-Iranian Railway, a 1,394-kilometre-long track spanning two mountain ranges, 360 bridges and 224 tunnels. The 10,000-year-old Jomon prehistoric sites in northern Japan. And the immense and intricate network of porticoes in the Italian city of Bologna. whc.unesco.org
