Bali’s farming future
Bali may be known for its beach bars, luxe resorts and temples, but to get to know the real Bali, travellers are invited on a coast-to-coast walk well off the beaten track. Passing through rice paddies, bamboo forests and villages, the 132-kilometre Astungkara Trail immerses hikers into rural Balinese life and local families working to regenerate the land. Groups are limited to 10 and guests can expect to walk between two and seven hours a day. The experience is run by Astungkara Way, a social enterprise that shares climatefriendly farming techniques with local communities and encourages young people to consider farming as a rewarding alternative to working in tourism. astungkaraway.com
