He’s always been a high achiever, but winning the Fields Medal, regarded as the top award in mathematics worldwide, took even Akshay Venkatesh by surprise.

After beginning his studies at the University of Western Australia at 13, graduating at 16 and now teaching at Stanford, the US-based professor became just the second Australian to win the prestigious award which is only given to two, three or four researchers worldwide under the age of 40.

The 37-year-old Venkatesh, whose research is in pure mathematics and specifically number theory and related areas, was born in Dehli but spent his early years in Perth.
