Harley Windsor

At just 21, figure skater Harley Windsor became Australia’s first Indigenous Winter Olympian at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea this year. “At first it was a bit of a surprise, but I guess it makes me a little bit honoured to be the first one,” Windsor says. Born in Sydney’s west, Windsor competed in the pairs figure-skating program with Russian-born partner Katia Alexandrovskaya. After winning the junior world championships last year, the duo finished 18th in PyeongChang but acknowledged it wasn’t their best performance. Even so, it’s quite a rise for Windsor, who only discovered ice skating a decade ago after stumbling across a rink in Blacktown. Now, he wants to set an example for more Indigenous Australians to hit the ice. “I hope that I can push them towards winter sports rather than summer sports,” he says.
