The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of the three major art museums in Australia. Founded in 1874, the Gallery is superbly located within beautiful parklands in the Domain overlooking Sydney Harbour. This much-loved historical gallery houses art pieces from classic to modern works.

The various galleries and exhibition halls of this spacious five-level art museum showcases a magnificent collection of traditional and contemporary art works. Its special collections feature Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, colonial and 19th-century Australian works, European old masters and the Asian arts.

The Gallery is the venue for the election of the three major annual arts awards in Australia - The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes - and showcases the art works of the winning entrants.

Admission to the Gallery is free. This includes free entry to its permanent galleries, most of its temporary exhibitions and events.

The art museum has a rich and varied collection of around 30,000 original pieces. It regularly exhibits around 2,000 pieces which are changed periodically to allow more artworks to be viewed and enjoyed by art lovers.

The most expensive piece of art acquired by the Gallery in 2008 is that of French classic painter Paul Cézanne's “Banks of the Marne”. The Gallery purchased it for an astronomical 16.2 million Australian dollars which marked a record high among public art in Australia.

A favourite amongst visitors is a Victorian piece by English artist, Frederic Lord Leighton's “Cymon and Iphigenia”.

The Gallery displays not only paintings but also exhibits fine works of sculpture, pottery and drawings from China, Japan and India in galleries on the lower level 1. Exhibits such as terra-cotta sculptures of the Tang dynasty, porcelain towers of the Han dynasty, Buddha figures... show the rich culture of China from thousands of years ago.

Leading the audience back to modern times are the galleries on the lower lever 2 which showcase works of contemporary art.

The Gallery is currently hosting a “Glorious” exhibition to explore earthly pleasures and heavenly realms through the Gallery's collection of Asian art. It hopes that the display of paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles and sculpture dating from the 1st century to the present can evoke compelling stories and realities of bygone eras from across Asia.

The latest display also includes the Christopher Worral Wilson Bequest of ancestral art from the Indonesian archipelago, which features exquisite sculpture, ceremonial objects, regalia and weapons.

The earthy sandy coloured walls of the Gallery’s elegantly constructed building with its imposing columned hallway entrance is reminiscent of a majestic Roman temple. Its exhibits pay tribute to civilization’s evolving cultural heritage and the best in fine arts.
