A Glorious Trip To the Emerald City

The Melbourne audience was breathless with anticipation as the curtain rose on the opening night of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of The Wizard Of Oz. Watching the classic story unfold with the addition of new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber was a warm and welcome respite from the cold May evening.

「Somewhere out of the rainbow…」

Rising theatre star Samantha Dodemaide charmed the audience with her delightful performance as Dorothy Gale, one of the most enduring heroines in Hollywood history. Dodemaide was outstanding, taking the audience with her every step of the way on her long journey from the little farm in Kansas to the spectacular glamour of the Emerald City.

Lucy Durack made a spectacular entrance as Glinda The Good Witch, making the audience truly believe in magic. Durack invested the role with a wonderful comedic touch, making Glinda a little more accessible than in the film. Jemma Rix as the Wicked Witch Of The West managed to do the same, bringing a light comic touch to her performance while still being spooky enough to satisfy the most diehard fans.

Anthony Warlow gave a wonderful performance as both Professor Marvel and the Wizard. Kind and benevolent when first encountering Dorothy on the road as Professor Marvel, he has her best interests at heart and does his best to help the vulnerable young girl. Then to his turn as the terrifying Wizard, demanding the impossible as a condition to fulfilling the seekers’ wishes- all as a cover up for the fact that he is in fact nothing but a humbug, someone who has no real power at all.

Eli Cooper as Scarecrow, Alex Rathberger as Tin Man and John Xintavelonis as the Lion all gave superb performances, bringing all the comedy and emotion that make this story a timeless classic.

Seeing this perennial favourite live onstage is family entertainment on a grand scale. The use of cutting edge technology in the form of projection screens breathes new life into the timeless story, ensuring that there’s something here for everyone. Wonderful performances, gorgeous costumes and dazzling backdrops combine to create a magical experience.

Brilliant…a ten-star production if ever there was one! -- The Sunday Telegraph

-- Andrew Lloyd Webber Producer of The Wizard of OZ

Fans of the movie will not be disappointed as the heart of the story remains the same- everyone understands the struggle to be more considerate (Tin Man’s lack of heart), more intelligent (Scarecrow and his wish for a brain) and of course Lion’s need for more courage- who hasn’t wished for all of these things at one time or another? But it’s Dorothy’s journey that we identify with the most strongly - we all have what we need to make us happy right now, we just need to learn to appreciate what is right there in front of us. This is something we are never too young to learn- or too old to be reminded of every now and then!

尤其在音樂方面,《Follow the Yellow Brick Road》、《somewhere Over the Rainbows》等經典曲目時刻迴響在舞臺上,還根據人物性格增 加了一些歌曲像女巫之歌《Bring Me the Broomstick》和讓人一下子就會喜歡上的旋律《Red Shoes Blue》,全劇讓觀眾在懷舊的同時,又有更摩登清新的感受。
