SUMMER SCHOOL There’s no time like the present to prepare for the approaching heat.

Summer can be tough for even the most diligent skincare fanatics and knowledgeable beauty gurus, but there’s no time like the present to prepare for the approaching heat. Dive head first into our summer tutorials.

-

Lesson 1: KEEP IT PERSONAL

A strong emphasis should be placed on tailoring your regimen to your needs. Study up on the mix-and-match offerings from beauty pillars La Mer – its first foundation is designed to slip easily into your existing routine – and Kiehl’s, which creates personalised apothecary products that will see you and your skin benefit from a tailor-made cocktail designed to answer your biggest skincare problems. LA MER THE SOFT FLUID LONG WEAR FOUNDATION IN PORCELAIN, $200; KIEHL’S APOTHECARY PREPARATIONS, $140.

Lesson 2: SUMMER NOTES

Forget the light floral notes of summers past. As things heat up we suggest opting for heady scents that simply smell decadent.

Lesson 3: TROPICAL OASIS

Even if your summer plans don’t involve jet-setting, your beauty cabinet can, and should, read like a geography textbook. Sisley’s tropical resins range will have you transported and purified all at once. FROM LE FT: SISLEY MATTIFYING MOISTURIZING SKIN CARE WITH TROPICAL RESINS, $160, AND INTENSIVE SERUM WITH TROPICAL RESINS, $200.

Lesson 4: FRESH TAKE

The new wave of nail colours is all about muted tones, and keeping your fingertips and toes awash with colour that’s been chalked up.

Lesson 5: BEACH TRESSES

So the water is still a little chilly but you want that perfect fresh-from-the-ocean frizz? Step into the shower with Redken’s Beach Envy Volume Texturizing shampoo and conditioner for instant just-back-from-thebeach hair minus the sand.

ELEVEN SEA SALT TEXTURE SPRAY, $24; REDKEN BEACH ENVY VOLUME TEXTURIZING SHAMPOO, $27.

Lesson 6: BRONZE AND GO

As we’ve noted, spring is a time for preparation, and while you’ll need little encouragement when it comes to building that glow, we do suggest opting for a product that saves time and requires minimal effort. Enter St. Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower, the glow-in-a-tube that is as useful as it is necessary. ST. TROPEZ GRADUAL TAN IN SHOWER, $40.

Lesson 7: 100 PER CENT HUMIDITY

With heat comes humidity. There’s nothing flattering about melted make-up, so experiment with products that have staying power. If all else fails, the right setting mist will keep you fresh and ready for anything. MECCA COSMETICA ALL SET MAKEUP PERFECTING MIST, $35.

Lesson 8: POWER POWDER

If It powders were a thing, this season turmeric would be leading the pack. It’s claimed the spice lowers cholesterol, strengthens your immune system and contains inflammatory properties, so it’s no wonder turmeric is in every yogi’s juice right now. If you’re not one for a morning smoothie, try an almond milk latte version for an added health kick.

Lesson 10: GROWN-UP GLITTER

Let Victoria Beckham school you on what it really means to apply glitter outside of art class. No longer reserved for craft time, the grown-up take is a lesson in less is more.

Lesson 9: LASH OUT

Mascara is a staple, and when it comes to prepping for the season ahead the only woman we can trust to educate us on what to do next is legendary make-up artist Pat McGrath. And here’s her take on the future of your lash look. How can lashes transform a look? “You can manipulate the shape, direction, length and volume of lashes using mascara to achieve so many different looks – anything from a 60s Twiggy lash to a full, soft, feathery lash. Adding mascara is so important when you want to add a touch of femininity or glamour. Lashes can really enhance the overall mood and theme of a look.” Each show season there’s almost always some focus on lashes. Why is this? “Full, fluttering lashes have been such a constant symbol of beauty in our culture for generations. Most women can identify with, and feel comfortable using, mascara. You can accessorise with lashes in different shades of mascara colours and formulations. Recent innovations in the technology and formulation of mascara are so exciting, because we can now achieve that variety and precision in application. Also, I think that in terms of experimentation, lashes are so easily adaptable to different trends.” What lash trends do you see coming up? “Lifted lashes create bigger, more visible lashes that highlight the natural width and length of the lashes. Try using the Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara for fuller, richer lashes. The new lash uplift brush lifts lashes from the root, simultaneously coating lashes for a glamorous eye transformation.” Do you have any tips for applying mascara? “The beauty of make-up artistry is that there is no right or wrong way to apply make-up. I love watching girls on Instagram taking artistry to the next level, experimenting and really having fun. That’s what it’s all about! But if you want a little help getting started, take the new Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara and push the centre of the Lash Uplift Brush against the root of the lashes to deposit mascara and create a strong base to lift lashes. Pull mascara through the lashes to extend – it’s a root-to-tip lift and volume boost.”
