Fenty Beauty, Rihanna’s debut make-up collection, is fierce, inclusive and set to transform your beauty bag. Here, the singer talks about what inspired her.
What is your earliest memory of make-up?
“The first time I remember having my make-upu done was for a beauty pageant I did in school. I was 15, about to be 16, just before I got signed. I had my full face done – my mum actually did my make-up. And ever since then, ever since I saw foundation on my skin, I could never look at my skin without foundation again. Make-up: it spoilt me.”
What was important to you in creating Fenty Beauty?
“One of the things that I felt was really important to start with was foundation. Foundation is one of those areas in the beauty industry that has a big void for women at extreme ends of the shade spectrum. There is this middle ground that’s covered really well. But then if you’re very pale or very dark, there aren’t a lot of options. I wanted to make sure that women of all skin tones could be included in what I created.”
When did you fall in love with make-up?
“My obsession with make-up started with watching my mum put her make-up on. I always loved to watch her, and all the funny faces she was making in the mirror. I never understood it until I got older and fell in love with make-up myself and really started becoming obsessed.”
