School of rocks

As she divests herself of an enviable cache of jewellery, selling it via online resale boutique Vestiaire Collective, Anna Dello Russo, the queen of fierce flash, gives her advice on choosing.

Iwould not say they are rules, more that I want jewellery to have a ‘wow’ effect and surprise people,” says Vogue Japan editor at large Anna Dello Russo, doyenne of spangly clothes and the accessories to go with them. The stylist has a phalanx of party-ready pieces from a multitude of designers, yet manages to command a distinctive look. Now, with an edit of her archive for sale on Vestiaire Collective, including vintage treasures from Chanel, Moschino, Miu Miu and Dolce & Gabbana, she shares her wisdom on picking jewellery.

A LITTLE EFFORT

“I style myself like I style a model, because I believe you should put your passion into yourself before translating it for other people. I also follow the rule that if you want to feel comfortable, you’ll never get ‘the look’, especially speaking of party season!”

CHAINED MELODY

“I would always go to a party with a gold chainstyle necklace or a Swarovski one. For example, I do love the Lanvin gold chain necklace with the number one round charms that I’m selling on Vestiaire: it means to me a new chapter, a new start and a turning point. Also, it makes you feel like a champion who won a race!”

ONE MORE TIME

“I have always been an avid fashion collector and for more than 30 years have accumulated an incredible quantity of clothes and accessories. But during last year, I realised that I was ready to start a new chapter in my life with a new energy. I now wear the same outfit and jewellery for different occasions. For example, I wore a vintage Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda dress and jewellery to the AmfAR in São Paulo in 2016, and again at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards at this year’s Milan Fashion Week. There is too much waste, so I think about the planet a lot now too, about sustainability and about educating the new generation.”

THE POWER OF ACCOUTERING

“What I have always loved and what I love in jewellery right now is its fascinating power; it has always been a fetish for me. Jewellery makes you escape from ordinary life and also gives you strength in your personal style.”

TOO MUCH IS NEVER ENOUGH

“I do love ‘too much-ness’ and I would suggest wearing [jewellery] with a statement mini-dress.”
