Sure, Chanel has a rollcall of beauty products that warrant hero status (you may have heard of Chanel No 5) but it’s the immediate and continued success of Rouge Noir that cements its significan­ce. Curiously, the colour came to fruition by chance when it was created by mixing red and black nail polish first on a shoot and then backstage at the 1994 Chanel show. The hue became a major post-show talking point and fuelled a love affair that continues to this day.
