Economists call it the lipstick effect – the concept that we splash out more on affordable luxury items during economic downturns. But at Vogue, we’ve always known that beauty is worth investing in. Now, more than ever, it’s time to focus on products that work the hardest and to indulge that little bit extra on something special to make you feel good.

The tried and tested winning products of the inaugural Vogue Beauty Awards have been officially announced. After months of using the best and brightest in beauty, our judges, and

Vogue’s own readers, have landed on what’s worth investing in for 2023. We’ve done the hard work – from slathering on serums until our faces shone, to curling and combing our hair to its limits – all in the name of research. To follow, the leading trends and our category winners.

Hardworking ingredients

Science-backed formulas that do the work for you are the clear front-runners. From wellknown skincare favourites, such as clinical brands SkinCeuticals and The Ordinary, to haircare solutions from Olaplex, with its patented bond-building technology, and make-up designed to be weightless (congratulations to Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation).

Regular rotation

Cult classics, those forever favourites that have stood the test of time, will always be popular. Whether handed down from Mum, or rediscovered later in life, long-time heroes including Chanel No. 5 perfume (which recently celebrated its 100th birthday), Nars’s best-selling Orgasm blush, Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair serum and GHD’s reimagined platinum hair straightener, all secured top spots.

Little luxuries

We can’t all own a Hermès Birkin, but we can snap up one of the brand’s lipsticks, which with its candy-like casing is a notable favourite. The trend for designer-label cosmetics extends across other categories, too. Chanel’s La Crème Main egg-shaped hand cream, YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture lipstick, and Dior’s Diorshow Pump ‘N’ Volume HD mascara all captivated.

Luminosity

Glowing, healthy, beautiful skin and hair is always in style and luminosity is the winning ticket across the board. From bright, dewy faces by way of Nars’s Sheer Glow Foundation, to Westman Atelier’s signature cream blush sticks, Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer for smooth, glossy hair, and Swisse Beauty’s convenient collagen powder – the vote was unanimous: it’s time to shine.

As for the judging process? Products were trialled by experts in each field and Vogue team members who submitted their scores after months of testing, with the highest-ranking taking top spots. The People’s Choice winners were gathered via a public vote by our readers (with 102,000 votes!), which was open for six weeks earlier this year.
