“The highlight of my career has been the friendships I have made from Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo to Bill Cunningham and Anna Piaggi,” says Gene Krell, who wrote a personal essay on his adopted country Japan in ‘More than this’, on page 258. Krell’s incredible career in fashion began in 1967 and continues to thrive now from Japan, where he is based with his wife, artist Naoko Inagaki. Krell explains his approach to remaining relevant: “To provide the answers, to have a sense of history yet always understand the mechanics of modernism, and to never let the person sitting at the next desk know more than you.”
