Tis the season for glitzy dresses, short hemlines and running wild in the streets – a sentiment shared by the Vogue team in December of 1985, who turned to Barcelona to frame their end-of-year summer issue. Photographer Monty Coles snapped Australian designs alongside fashion editor Judith Cook in a shoot inspired by the glamour of summer in the city. From strolling one of the city’s famous wide boulevards to admiring art at the Picasso Museum, the shoot was a celebration of all things culture, warm-weather dressing and travel. Staying on theme for the cover, art editor Christina Zimpel tried her hand at collage – complete with the Sagrada Família and a nod to Christmas. It remains as relatable as ever: we can still imagine ourselves strolling La Rambla in a scrunchie and summer dress. Shine on, Barcelona!
