THE BEAUTY OF CHOICE
BEAUTIFUL DESIGN AND SMART USE OF SPACE BRINGS FORM AND FUNCTION TO THIS STUNNING WAREHOUSE CONVERSION.
Interior designer Carole Whiting is known for creating refined, sophisticated spaces with incredible materiality. Her own apartment is no exception, with the crisp, monochromatic palette of materials and tones establishing a unique, minimalist aesthetic.
The existing kitchen was dark and awkward, with a heavy marble bench that divided and crowded the space, and cabinets that inhibited movement through the space.
Whiting removed this island, replacing it with a lightweight, freestanding trestle-style table. She placed cabinetry around the walls to open up the room to natural light and the rest of the apartment.
To maintain the clean aesthetic, Whiting hid the dishwasher behind one of the white larch cabinets, and a slim, integrated fridge-freezer behind another. “Integrated appliances from Fisher & Paykel allowed me to keep the lines in the joinery to a minimum” says Whiting.
Whiting created leather door pulls on the fridge and freezer panels, and added custom-made black handles and knobs on the cooking appliances to keep the visual noise down and remove stainless steel from the kitchen landscape.
“I like to challenge myself to keep both materials and palette minimal. Here, the main concept was to create a high functioning kitchen with as little visual disruption as possible. The simplicity of the palette and materials, and a purity of form was the overriding theory for me, and it has resulted in an elegant, light-filled, working kitchen.”
