SHOW: Gogglebox Australia CHANNEL: TEN TIME: 8.30pm, Thursday
WELL, here I am, reviewing a show about people reviewing shows. But what a great show it is. Based on the UK smash hit of the same name, Gogglebox is a weekly observational series which captures the reactions of ordinary Australians, like you and me, as they watch the news, argue over politics, cheer their favourite sports teams and digest current affairs and documentaries. Ten chosen households are rigged with special cameras to capture every unpredictable moment. The pure, raw reactions you see on your own TV screen aren’t unlike your own when watching the range of content across the channels. There are some favourites, of course, my particular household being Adam and Symon who continuously wear kooky and colourful socks while watching their programs, and the Delpechitra family who can always make me giggle. For the most part, the show is comedic, but occasionally the families will have to settle down and watch an upsetting documentary or news item and it really does bring the mood down. But it also shows the emotions that we all can experience when watching similar programs, and it shows all of us watching at home that it’s perfectly normal. Gogglebox is something that a lot of people could do easily, and a lot of people would love to do, it’s just so fun. Imagine being able to do your nightly routine of watching anything and everything on television, in the comfort of your couch, but you’re being paid. Sign me up.
