This Day in History, 1857
THIS was the day decreed to begin moving the bodies from the cemetery in Lock Street Beechworth, to the new site on the outskirts of the town. The process of gathering all the remains - some were in coffins, others between sheets of bark - continued until the end of the month. By then, 64 bodies had been recovered.
There were a number of surprises. One coffin contained nothing. The formal re-interment took place on September 1.
