RESIDENTS of the fledgling settlement of Beechworth put forward their request to the authorities that a township be formed out of the collection of shops, shacks and tents on the Spring Creek diggings.

George Smythe made a survey, put together a plan, and by September, a crowd of buyers was gathering at the post office to bid for 44 quarter-acre allotments.
