This Day in History, 1864

-

A BIG day for the Cusack family, as the foundation stone was laid for their new hotel in Wangaratta.

Mrs Cusack did the honours with the trowel, as the partners in the venture, Michael and Thomas Cusack, gave support.

Michael was one of Wangaratta’s most celebrated early characters - butcher, auctioneer and town councillor.

His son, Thomas, was one of the colony’s best sprinters, and was virtually unbeatable over sprint distances in the 1860s.

Thomas was the landlord of the Royal (now the Pinsent) at the time, and the two family hotels were able to look out towards each other across the vacant space known as The Square.
