Make most of autumn and hook into fishing

- With WANGARATTA

THE fishing is amazing all across the region at the moment.

I suspect the warm dry March that we just experienced may be to blame for this.

The Murray cod fishing remains quite good in many areas, even those that are usually slowing right down by this time of the year.

I have had two really good cod fishing sessions over the last week including one evening right here in Wangaratta on the Ovens River where I managed to catch and release three small trout cod, one small Murray cod and a chunky 55cm trout cod, all in the space of an hour and a half.

The smaller cod were all caught on a OneWell Lunch diving lure and the larger trout cod was caught on a Barambah surface lure.

On Friday evening I was bait fishing near Peechelba where I managed to catch and release two trout cod, one Murray cod and one yellowbelly.

All fish were caught in the last two hours of the day, using worms as bait.

All fish were small, under 30cm, but it was great fun.

Across the region the redfin fishing remains strong.

I have had reports of good redfin being caught at Lake Hume and Lake Buffalo.

I fished the Waranga Basin with my friend Rohan last week and managed to catch a nice feed of redfin.

I kept 10 fish and threw a fair few back.

Eight were OK fish but not huge, and two were quite nice fish over 30cm.

There was a sunrise bite window where the redfin went stupid for half an hour.

In that time I caught a lot of redfin on a Strike Tiger curl tail grub soft plastic in “Banana Shock” colour.

For the rest of the day the fishing was steady, but consistent and I caught most of my fish during that time on small diving minnows.
