Winton set to welcome V8 stars
MOTORSPORTS enthusiasts will be out in force this weekend with 2018 Virgin Australia V8 Supercars Championship rolling into Winton Motor Raceway from Friday morning.
Led by Shell Racing’s Scott McLaughlin, who leads the 2018 standings, the nation’s best drivers will converge on the local track for the Winton SuperSprint.
Two practice sessions will be held on Friday with a further practice session held Saturday morning before qualifying is held at 12:40pm.
Race 13 of the season will then be held at 3:50pm on Saturday while race 14 will be held from 1:45pm Sunday after qualifying at 10:25am.
Other support categories include V8 Touring Cars, SuperUtes, Touring Car Masters and Australian Racing Cars.
But all eyes will be in the V8 Supercars and seeing who can manoeuvre themselves around the tight Winton circuit the best.
The 2017 round at Winton saw McLaughlin claim race one before Shane Van Gisbergen returned on Sunday to take home the first place finish.
Arguably the series’ best driver Jamie Whincup was a model of consistency, finishing second on both occasions to take home the most points for the round.
Those three will again be vy- ing for top spot in both races with McLaughlin keen to hold on to, and extend, his current championship lead of 158 points to Van Gisbergen.
Albury driver and reigning Bathurst champion David Reynolds currently occupies third spot in the standings, 168 points behind McLaughlin and will be keen to move up the standings in front of his ‘home’ crowd.
Craig Lowndes is always a fan favourite and is always one to watch while James Courtney, Scott Pye, Chaz Mostert, Fabi- an Coulthard, Tim Slade, Mark Winterbottom and the Kelly brothers – Rick and Todd – will also want to improve their positioning.
Racing begins from 8:25am on Friday morning.
Wangaratta locals will also get the chance to meet with Whincup and Van Gisbergen tomorrow with the pair set to visit the Holden dealership at Wangaratta Motor Group from midday.
