THE first of Merriwa Magpies’ tournaments begins this Sunday in Wodonga.

With success meeting the Magpies at every turn last year with multiple players reaching the state level, 2018 shapes as a big year for the All Abilities side.

With a new coach in Bob Murray at the helm, Merriwa Magpies are ready for the carnival schedule.

The Magpies play teams from around the region in a carnival format, with Wodonga hosting Sunday’s event, then Echuca will host on June 3, Shepparton will host on July 29 before Wangaratta hosts on August 19.

Murray said his side has been working on their skills.

“The main emphasis is to enjoy what you’re doing,” Murray said.

“We have had a focus on getting our skills better.

“We have had a number of new players come to try out for the team, including two girls which is great for us.”

Josh Jose and Matthew Bear have been invited to try out for Victoria Country.

Bendigo is new to the competition this year, and will front up for the first carnival of the year.

“Bendigo is a big city so we are expecting them to be pretty strong,” Murray said.

“These carnivals are really fun; it’s great for the kids so hopefully they enjoy the game and we can go well.”
