Veterans come to lawn courts

Wangaratta Chronicle - - Sport -

THE Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club will host the first of four veterans tournaments this Sunday with entries flooding in for the event.

Local veterans tennis legend Mick Keogh, who has been the regular tournament manager, is taking a break and will be absent this tournament and is instead playing in the Masters Games in Alice Springs.

Keogh is confident, however, that other lawn tennis club members will step up to fill the roles usually taken by his, and his other Wangaratta teammates who are also joining him in Alice Springs.

The Keogh name is still involved as Mick’s wife Val is taking names for the Sunday tournament.

To register for play ring Val on 5721 5613.

The round robin tournament will be ably sorted by Frank Harris and Phil Peck while other members will be helping with catering and generally making the visitors welcome.

As usual the tournament is generously sponsored by Gapsted Wines which supplies the trophies for court winners.

The season opening event was held at Yarrawonga a fortnight ago and Wangaratta member Russell O’Brien said this Sunday would be another great day.

“Many players from that tournament indicated they were looking forward to coming over to Wangaratta’s beautiful courts and famous hospitality,” he said.

“It will be a great day.”
