A TRADITION passed down from members of a former association has sparked excitement in the Wangaratta Rostrum Club.

The perpetual trophy was introduced in the Wangaratta Speaking Association about 40 years ago in an effort to increase membership before it ultimately disbanded in 1981.

It was brought back by former members Manfred Reich and Carl Clayden when fellow member Tim Costigan received the Most Improved Award and symbolically united the two clubs.

Mr Reich emphasised the importance of the community club as it teaches people from all walks of life about public speaking.

Members meet at the Wangaratta Library on the first and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm.
