FROM Perth to the world, two local teenagers are part of the Nedlands Rugby Union Club girls team heading to Hong Kong.

Alexander Heights resident Keira Macaskill and Currambine’s Cara Gerber will compete in the All Girls Rugby Tournament next month.

The composite under 14s side features players from Nedlands, ARKS, Bayswater and Wests Scarborough.

Coach Alan McFillin said rugby sevens was on the rise for girls in WA, with the state the first in Australia to put together a full season competition back in 2016.

“One of the main aims of taking the Nedlands team over is seeing where they’re at at an international level,” he said.

Mr McFillin said the club had done some fundraising, but they were keen to secure sponsorship for the girls to reduce the players’ expenses.

Co-coach Freda Black said the sport is offering girls the potential to enhance their skills and go places.

If you are interested in sponsoring the girls or getting involved with the upcoming rugby season, call Mr McFillin on 0437 212 484 or head to www.nedland
