Chance to dine with rugby le­gend

A RUGBY league le­gend is headed to the north­ern sub­urbs to help a Heathridge ju­nior club.

Joon­dalup Giants Rugby League Club will host for­mer player and tele­vi­sion com­men­ta­tor Dar­ren Lock­yer for a fundrais­ing sports­man’s din­ner on April 18.

Hav­ing played for the Bris­bane Bron­cos in the NRL, Queens­land in State of Ori­gin and Aus­tralian Kan­ga­roos in 59 in­ter­na­tional Test matches, Lock­yer is con­sid­ered one of the great­est players of all time.

Dur­ing his 17-year ca­reer he set many records for his club, state and coun­try, in­clud­ing most NRL ap­pear­ances, most State of Ori­gin ap­pear­ances, most games as cap­tain and most tries for the Aus­tralian team.

Guests at the Joon­dalup Re­sort pool­side event can hear from Lock­yer about his ca­reer, with a ques­tion and an­swer fo­rum and op­por­tu­ni­ties for a meet and greet, photos and to get things signed.

There will also be auc­tions and raf­fles with prizes in­clud­ing signed mem­o­ra­bilia and hol­i­day pack­ages.

Tick­ets are $120 per per­son or $1100 for a ta­ble of 10, in­clud­ing a three-course meal and two-hour drinks pack­age.

“Funds raised will go to­wards new train­ing equip­ment for the ju­niors and en­sur­ing we have a suc­cess­ful end of sea­son,” ju­niors pres­i­dent Gregg Pear­son said.

“We want to pro­vide these kids as many op­por­tu­ni­ties as pos­si­ble and re­tain them in the club.

“Grass­roots sports is the most im­por­tant level of all sports; with­out a suc­cess­ful grass­roots cam­paign we have no se­nior teams.”
