Front can’t thwart race

Wanneroo Times - - Wafl - John Bird

WINTER racing started with an anticipated forecast of strong winds associated with a cold front, so 20 hardy crews from Hillarys Yacht Club were pleased to start before the big blow on Sunday morning.

In winter the yachts commence on a staggered start based on handicap, with the bulk of the fleet timed to finish together.

Although the first four yachts in division 1 finished within two minutes of each other, Perle (John Bird) led the group, with

Salamander (Bruce Bradford) second and Lithium (Wayne Pitcher) third and fastest.

In division 2, another front marker was successful, with Panache (Geoff and Rita James) winning from Helga (Mark Taylor) and Farrouk (Lee Burrows and Rod Hernaman).

Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was fastest.

Chris Blackney made a successful return to racing in division 3 with a first and fastest on Vaya Con

Dios, with Sheer Magic (Tony Waymouth) second.

Larraine Brindle, having acquired Anastasia in Albany to race at HYC, was third.
