START­ING a busi­ness is ex­cit­ing and likely to be one of the big­gest de­ci­sions of your life.

There are many rea­sons why peo­ple choose to start their own busi­ness – to leave be­hind a nine-to-five job, pur­sue an idea or to make ad­di­tional money – and some­times it is out of ne­ces­sity.

Run­ning a small busi­ness can be chal­leng­ing, es­pe­cially for a first-time busi­ness owner.

How­ever, by do­ing your re­search, seek­ing good ad­vice and ac­quir­ing busi­ness knowl­edge be­fore you take the plunge, you will be bet­ter equipped to run your busi­ness more ef­fi­ciently and man­age busi­ness risks.

There are more than 221,000 small busi­nesses in WA, rep­re­sent­ing 97 per cent of busi­nesses in the state.

For more than 30 years, the Small Busi­ness De­vel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (SBDC) has provided in­for­ma­tion, ad­vice and sup­port to small busi­nesses across WA and is the only gov­ern­ment agency that pro­vides free, con­fi­den­tial ser­vices tai­lored to the needs of small busi­nesses.

The SBDC has a range of re­sources to help get you started in­clud­ing:

■ prac­ti­cal in­for­ma­tion on how to start a busi­ness;

■ how to find the busi­ness li­cences and per­mits you re­quire;

■ a range of busi­ness skills work­shops;

■ ad­vice on com­mer­cial leas­ing; and

■ free busi­ness tools and tem­plates you can download and use.

Our free and low-cost small busi­ness work­shops pro­vide prac­ti­cal in­for­ma­tion on how to build a suc­cess­ful, prof­itable and dy­namic small busi­ness.
