Speedy resolution sought
RESIDENTS and the City of Wanneroo are calling on Main Roads WA to more than halve the speed limit on several Mariginiup roads.
The default unposted limit on semi-rural roads such as Via Vista Drive, Lord Maselle Place, Zest Court, Seminara Place, Meadowlands Drive, Conductor Retreat and Timely Hostess Mews is 110km/h.
After residents raised concerns about safety in light of a potential increase in trucking traffic earlier this year, the City asked Main Roads to do a speed limit review.
That resulted in Main Roads proposing to make the limit 70km/h on those roads.
However at its October meeting, the council voted to ask Main Roads to reduce the limit to 50km/h and to meet residents to hear their concerns.
Mayor Tracey Roberts said it was disappointing the initial request for a 50km/h speed limit was not approved.
“Whilst MRWA’s proposed speed limit of 70km/h is much better compared to the existing default limit of 110km/h, council believes it would be in the community’s best interests if the speed limit was reduced to 50km/h,” she said.
Resident Jolanda Capes said about two thirds of residents would prefer a 50km/h limit and generally people did “the right thing” while driving there because they were mindful of safety for children and horses.
“We’ve got a school bus that runs down the road,” she said. “It’s an equestrian estate; people ride their horses to get to the bridal tracks.”
Main Roads spokesman Dean Roberts said a 70km/h limit had been suggested after a review of the roads and Main Roads was waiting for agreement from the City before implementing any changes.
“The roads in question are under the control of local council and any discussion on speed limits and request for changes from local residents needs to be addressed to council,” he said.
“Main Roads makes every effort to apply appropriate speed limits that are considered reasonable by the majority of motorists.”
Linda Strickland, Brigitte Scheier, Ruth Nicolaisen, Tina Graham, Sharon McCormack and Jolanda Capes want the speed limit on Mariginiup roads reduced.
