Time to check se­cu­rity fenc­ing

WITH sum­mer ap­proach­ing, the City of Joon­dalup has urged res­i­dents with a pool or spa to en­sure se­cu­rity gates and fences meet safety re­quire­ments.

The City is home to more than 22,200 pri­vately-owned swim­ming pools and spas and is re­quired by State leg­is­la­tion to in­spect these at least once ev­ery four years, as well as carry out re-in­spec­tions where mod­i­fi­ca­tions are re­quired.

In a state­ment the City said drown­ing was the sin­gle big­gest cause of ac­ci­den­tal death among chil­dren un­der five years old and it was im­por­tant ev­ery res­i­dent took re­spon­si­bil­ity to make sure their pool or spa com­plied with cur­rent safety reg­u­la­tions.

Safety re­quire­ments in­clude hav­ing pools and spas be­ing fully sur­rounded by com­ply­ing bar­ri­ers, pool fences be­ing 1.2m high and self­clos­ing gates.
