Birt, Thomp­son put Roos on course to win

WAN­NEROO has jumped to 11th on the lad­der, fol­low­ing its sec­ond win in as many matches af­ter a bril­liant bat­ting per­for­mance against Joon­dalup on Sat­ur­day at Kingsway Sports Ground.

Re­sum­ing bat­tle at 133, the Roos lost heart and soul bats­man Matthew Spoors early on in the in­nings to be floun­der­ing on 2-47.

How­ever, Travis Birt and Stu­art Thomp­son en­tered the fray and im­me­di­ately turned the match on its head.

The dy­namic duo blasted a spec­tac­u­lar 169run third-wicket part­ner­ship to zoom past Joon­dalup’s to­tal and se­cure the first-in­nings vic­tory.

Birt was even­tu­ally dis­missed at 3-216 af­ter pro­duc­ing a mas­ter­ful cen­tury, which com­prised 12 fours and four sixes in his to­tal of 113.

Haydn Slodecki and Thomp­son fell soon af­ter as the Roos pushed the to­tal to 5-236, with Thomp­son scor­ing 87 from 130 and pro­vid­ing an ex­cel­lent foil to Birt’s in­nings.

Chris­tian Smith and Caiden Ea­ton added some late-in­nings fire­works help­ing boost the score to 303 be­fore the Roos de­clared.

Con­nor Chad­wick tried his best for the Cen­tu­ri­ons with the ball, tak­ing a re­spectable 3-93 amongst the car­nage.

Joon­dalup man­aged to stave off an out­right de­feat, nav­i­gat­ing through 34 overs and fin­ish­ing with 4-73.
