Guide dog pups have their day on big screen

GUIDE Dogs WA will be at sev­eral screen­ings of a US doc­u­men­tary as part of this sum­mer’s Lot­tery­west Films pro­gram.

The Perth Fes­ti­val out­door movie sched­ule in­cludes Pick of the Lit­ter, screen­ing at UWA’s Somerville and ECU’s Joon­dalup Pines the­atres over the fes­tive sea­son.

The doc­u­men­tary di­rected by Don Hardy Jr and Dana Nach­man fol­lows five labrador pup­pies be­ing trained to be­come guide dogs.

Film pro­gram man­ager Tom Vin­cent said it showed “the best of hu­man­ity work­ing with the best of the an­i­mal world”. Pick of the Lit­ter will screen at Somerville un­til De­cem­ber 30 and at Joon­dalup Pines from Jan­uary 1 to 6.

Staff and vol­un­teers from Guide Dogs WA will be avail­able be­fore and af­ter screen­ings on De­cem­ber 27, 28 and 29, then Jan­uary 5 and 6, to dis­cuss the ser­vices they pro­vide and ways the com­mu­nity can get in­volved with the or­gan­i­sa­tion. They will also have some ca­nine am­bas­sadors and dogs in train­ing with them.
