IF you own a gas, electric or solar storage hot water system that is more than four years old, its tank may be in danger of rusting out, according to All Anode Replacements owner Dennis Warburton.

Most storage hot water systems have an anode in them. It is a metal rod, usually magnesium, installed inside the tank so that it is immersed in the water.

The anode then attracts all the rust to itself so it corrodes away instead of the tank, generally lasting for about four years.

“Replacing the anode can more than double the life of your hot water system, with more than 90 per cent of hot water systems failing because anode replacement has been neglected,” Mr Warburton said.

“By simply replacing the anode, you can save more than $1000 by not having to replace the whole system.”
