SUPERMARKET giant Aldi is heading to the Warwick Grove Shopping Centre.

The Metro North West Joint Development Assessment Panel last week conditionally approved an internal reconfiguration and addition of a supermarket at the Beach Road centre.

The development works, costing about $2.1 million, will include the amalgamation of tenancies to use vacant floor space, loading docks, clearance of bushland on the northern embankment to allow for delivery trucks and new landscaping.

About 7150 sq m of bushland including six trees will be cleared to give an additional 1944sq m of bitumen.

The new landscaping will include low-level ground cover because the “area has minimal public surveillance and has occasionally been subject to anti-social behaviour” and an additional eight trees to be planted to the north of the regraded embankment area.

At the June 11 meeting, presiding member Karen Hyde moved an amendment to allow detailed landscaping plans to be submitted to and approved by the City of Joondalup before Aldi moves in rather than before development starts, as originally recommended.

She said this would allow the applicant to “carry out internal servicing immediately and maintain the need to ensure appropriate bushland clearance prior to the approval of the landscape plans”.

The amendment was unanimously approved.

Aldi will soon be going head-to-head with Woolworths at Warwick Grove Shopping Centre.
