ABOUT 10,000 cubic metres of excess sand will be transferred from Sorrento Beach to Whitfords Nodes Beach next month to combat coastal erosion north of Hillarys Boat Harbour.

The erosion has resulted in loss of part of the dune system and vegetation next to Whitfords Nodes.

The City of Joondalup project is being part-funded by the State Government and once finished will provide Whitfords Nodes Beach with a buffer to storms, and protect the dunes and public openspace area.

It will also reduce the high build-up of sand at Sorrento Beach.

Work is scheduled to start on December 3 and will be happening between 7pm and 7am for about three weeks.

During this time, access to both beaches will be closed.

Mayor Albert Jacob said the City would endeavour to minimise any inconvenience to beach users during that time by undertaking the works at night.

“The City’s 17km stretch of coastline is highly valued by residents and visitors, and we will continue to implement programs and projects that address current and future climate change impacts in order to manage and protect vulnerable areas of our coastline,” he said.
