Grants decisions made in private

-

More than $165,000 will be allocated through Baw Baw Shire’s community development grants this year, but the decisions have been made at a private meeting of council.

The 34 successful applicants will be announced on November 13.

Previously, councillors discussed and debated the recipients of the annual grants program at a council meeting.

Planning and economic development director Matthew Cripps said council decided on the grants at a confidential, closed meeting on October 14.

He said council would not publically announce the successful grants until the presentation night.

Mr Cripps said the process was introduced following a review of the grants program in 2013.

“The community development grants program is a significant investment that council makes into supporting the community.

“Therefore, council considers it only fitting to celebrate the grant recipients and their wonderful projects and programs, which they will be delivering over the next 12 months with council’s support, at a formal presentation.”

A media release issued by the shire said 34 applicants would receive funds.

Community groups were able to apply for funding in three categories – environment; youth, community events and programs; and minor capital works.

The grants available were for the maximum amount each of $2000 for environment related community programs, $3000 for youth, community events and programs; and $10,000 for minor capital works programs.

Council will allocate $165,112 including $7887 to four environmental project, $41,298 awarded to 15 applicants in the youth, community events and programs; and, $115,927 to minor capital works applications.

Mayor Debbie Brown said the grants would help transform and support the community.

“Hardworking community groups and volunteers are fundamental to developing, improving and supporting our local areas. Their commitment and teamwork also shape the distinct characters of our smaller communities,” she said.

Cr Brown said council officers would contact all applicants to advise them of the outcome of their application.
