Guitarist now a front man

-

European festival regular Joe Matera will grace the West Gippsland Arts Centre stage for the first time on Saturday, December 12.

Joe, a singer/songwriter and guitar rock artist from Newborough, will support indie-folk band “Skipping Girl Vinegar”.

Signed by a European label about five years ago, Joe has enjoyed a busy 2015.

As well as offering private guitar lessons in Warragul, he toured Europe with a performance on the main stage of the “Wing and Wheels Festival” in Germany, released his third fulllength album “Louder than Words” and signed with a Dutch label.

Despite his continuing success in Europe, Joe said it was hard to get support at home due to such great talent in Melbourne and hoped this upcoming gig would introduce his acoustic style and original songs to new fans.

Picking up a guitar at age 15, Joe performed with countless original and cover outfits including rock outfit “Geisha” and classic rock band “Double Vision”. He has also worked with legendary US producer Tom Werman (Motley Crue and Poison) and shared the stage with “Dragon” and “Taxiride”.

“I’ve been making a living from music for 25 years,” said Joe.

However, his solo break came in 2012 with the release of single “Fallen Angels” which “opened up doors for me”.

Moving from his comfort position behind a guitar to front man was an exposing experience for Joe. However, growing confidence has made it easier to step into the spotlight.

Joe said love and relationships were common themes to his music and “my wife inspires me a lot when it comes to music”.

During his recent European tour, Joe played 35 shows. A highlight was playing a half-hour set on the main stage at the Wing and Wheels Festival in Germany which attracted 10,000 fans.

Skipping Girl Vinegar is well known to local audiences after its annual performances in Drouin.

Tickets to see Skipping Girl Vinegar with special guest Joe Matera are $35 for adults, $32 for concession, $30 for members and groups, and $27 for students.
