Annette returns to breastcare role
Annette Houlahan has been welcomed back to Warragul as the McGrath Breast Care Nurse to support local families experiencing breast cancer.
Ms Houlahan returns to the West Gippsland Healthcare Group role she was first appointed to in 2009 following a short break.
Nursing for more than 30 years with significant experience in specialist breast care nursing, Ms Houlahan decided to return to contribute positively to the local community and provide support to women experiencing breast cancer and their families.
“I think because I can provide a free service, I think that’s fantastic,” she said. “I can be there for people in their most needy hour and support people through their journey.”
The position, funded by the McGrath Foundation, helps provide invaluable physical, psychological and emotional support for local families, from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.
There are currently 105 McGrath Breast Care Nurses working in communities across Australia, supporting more than 36,000 families experiencing breast cancer.
Ms Houlahan’s position has been made possible as the result of the Federal Government’s provision in 2013 of $18.5 million over four years to the McGrath Foundation to recruit, train and place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in 57 locations across Australia.
Co-founded by Jane and Glenn McGrath after Jane’s initial recovery from breast cancer, the McGrath Foundation aims to raise muchneeded funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across the country, whilst increasing breast awareness in younger women.
“Coupled with their professional knowledge, our McGrath Breast Care Nurse Annette Houlahan will be able to offer vital support for Warragul,” said McGrath Foundation ambassador and director Tracy Bevan.
Families in West Gippsland community can self-refer to this free service by calling Annette Houlahan on 5623 0627.
