Monument for Poowong
Poowong's long association with competitive ploughing has been recognised with the unveiling of a monument in the town.
A plough mounted on a large concrete base in Main St marks the 50th anniversary of the West Gippsland Ploughing Association and acknowledges members that have represented Australia at world championships.
Six members of the association have competed in world titles on 28 occasions since 1961 and the date of the unveiling of the monument had to be altered until after Brett Loughridge returned from this year's championships in Denmark.
More than 50 people including South Gippsland Shire councillors Lorraine Blunt and Bob Newton watched the monument be unveiled by several of the association's inaugural members.
A minute's silence was also observed in memory of inaugural member and world championship representative Alex Morrison.
The idea for the mounted plough came from an initial member and a former world representative Ron Richards after seeing something similar in a small European town.
The project was supported by Strzelecki Lions Club, South Gippsland Shire, the Poowong Community Consultative Committee and local people Pat Kennedy, Russell McNally and Richard Briggs who arranged for the plough to be galvanised.
