Music proves a passion

-

A shattered musical theatre dream turned into a positive for Yarragon singer/songwriter Maddie Rose Huysman.

The 19-year-old recently released her debut EP and will perform at the Queenscliff Music Festival next weekend. These achievements come just two years after changing her career aspirations to singing.

Having been part of musical theatre “for as long as I can remember” through Warragul Youth Theatre, Class Act Productions and school productions, Maddie Rose was not accepted into a musical theatre course.

Instead, she found herself studying music performance in Melbourne.

“Music itself was never something I found myself wanting to do,” she said. “Now I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”

Having studied at Warragul Regional College and Trafalgar High School, Maddie Rose is aiming to branch out from busking in the city to perform her original acoustic folk style at open mic, songwriters clubs and festivals.

She said acceptance into Queenscliff Music Festival’s “Foot-in-the-Door” contest as one of only 15 artists was “pretty exciting”.

“It’s the biggest festival I’ve ever applied for,” said Maddie Rose. “This year I decided I might as well give it a shot. They’re quite hard to get into.”

Maddie Rose recently recorded, produced and released her five-track EP “The Other Side” inspired by life events.

She is filming a video clip and aiming to release a new EP at the start of 2016. She regularly performs at Monkey Biz Café in Newborough, Power Ranch at Trafalgar East and in Bourke St Mall.

“I love being out there doing my music,” she said.
