Recreation Programs for individuals with disabilities
Interchange Gippsland is a community based, not for profit organisation providing disability support to families across the Gippsland region. They specialise in recreation programs that facilitate social inclusion and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Ms Debbie Knight, CEO Interchange Gippsland said “Our programs at Interchange Gippsland assist individuals with disabilities have new experiences and try new things in our community in group based settings.”
“Our programs are designed to break down the barriers and show participants what they can do rather than what they can’t. Programs are age appropriate and the individuals are assisted by a team of Support Workers, Volunteers and Program Coordinators who provide professional supervision and support on trips”.
Interchange Gippsland has been expanding their operations with more services and programs on offer for a wide variety of ages. New programs have recently commenced in the Baw Baw Shire.
Ms Knight explained, “Structured group support starts from ages 10 -13 years with the Holiday Options Program which involves half day and full day group activities. From ages 14-17 years we operate the ROADIES program which involves full day activities and up to 4 day camps in holiday periods. All activities are age appropriate and the participants get involved in fun and exciting pursuits that children want to do.”
Interchange Gippsland also has a number of adult programs as well as offering Individual Service Package (ISP) management and purchased care services. Family support is offered through the Connecting Families programs which creates social networks and linkages for families in like situations. Their volunteer program is unique and innovative whereby teenagers provide peer support to participants on activities under supervision from support staff. Interchange Gippsland is also a ‘Child Safer’ organisation with staff undertaking specialist Child Wise training and comprehensive screening of both staff and volunteers. Interchange Gippsland’s programs cater for individuals with disabilities that include Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities.
“Through our programs and services participants have new social experiences within our local community and importantly their family/carer receive some much needed time out and can enjoy a respite break from providing ongoing care,” Ms Knight concluded.
