Lucky escape

-

A vehicle took down 200 metres of power lines and a power pole before crashing through the front fence of a Trafalgar house early Thursday morning while a young family was asleep in the house.

The female passenger in the vehicle narrowly escaped serious injury when a fence post speared through the windscreen of the vehicle.

The collision occurred at about 4.15am when the driver of the Ford utility lost consciousness while driving west on Princes Hwy.

Police said the vehicle smashed through the front fence and play equipment but did not impact the house where family members were asleep.

Police said the vehicle drifted off the highway at a moderate to high speed, crashing into a power pole on the corner of Princes Hwy and Princes Ave.

Police said the pole was “sheared” at the base and brought down 200 metres of power lines.

The vehicle then crashed into the front yard of a house on the opposite corner of Princes Ave, smashing down 10 metres of a timber fence and children’s play equipment.

Police said the 44-yearold female passenger narrowly escaped injury when a fence post speared through the windscreen close to where she was sitting.

The driver, a 44-yearold male, and female passenger, were both from Hampton Park. They were taken to West Gippsland Hospital but sustained no serious injuries.

One lane of the Princes Hwy and the Ashby St rail crossing was closed for several hours while SP Ausnet restored power to the area. CFA and Quality Roads also assisted to clean up the area.
