Gulls continue to rise
No opponent will be taking Warragul lightly any more.
The Gulls stormed into a clear fourth place on the Gippsland League ladder after a comprehensive all the way win against Sale at Western Park on Saturday.
Not only did the victory give Warragul a little breathing space in the “five” it was another big setback for Sale that, while it may have had a couple of welcome returns from long term injuries, is struggling with only two wins from seven rounds.
The Gulls’ early wins against Moe and Morwell may not have raised many eyebrows among the top sides but their past two - away to Wonthaggi and Saturday’s over Sale - certainly have.
Maffra won the “battle” for second spot on the ladder with an away win at Traralgon.
Traralgon pegged the margin back to 14 points - 13-14 to 12-6 - at the siren but the Eagles were in control all game.
Leongatha was expected to continue on its winning way, and it did, trouncing Moe 21-14 to 5-5 despite taking the foot off the pedal in the last quarter.
Moe would be eyeing a place in the “five” - it’s there at the moment ahead of Bairnsdale on percentage - and hoping to be much more competitive against the Parrots especially on the day Peter Ainsworth played his 300th senior game.
Former Leongatha star Col Sanbrook was Moe’s best. Bairnsdale will regret dropping Saturday’s game to Morwell and not claiming fifth place on the ladder outright.
After a draw in the previous round Morwell got its first win of the season scoring 15-6 to 10-15.
An injury hit Drouin made a fast start against Wonthaggi Power but that was the end of it, Power running out winners 14-12 to 7-6 stretching the gap with the game’s last four goals.
