Poultry permit
Approval is being sought for a poultry keeping operation in Warragul.
The proposal by James Lewis is to keep a maximum of 100 birds in three coups on his 0.613 hectare (one acre) property at 3 Warraview Close.
The land zoned Low Density Residential backs onto Princes Freeway just west of King St.
The application to Baw Baw Shire is for the “use and development of land for extensive animal husbandry (poultry keeping) retrospective”.
Council had told the applicant that he is required to give public notice of the proposal “because it may cause material detriment to others”.
In assessing the plans the shire’s co-ordinator of public health Ewan Ross said bird waste would need to be removed daily or stored appropriately to prevent nuisance complaints”.
The original proposal was to house budgerigars, finches and chickens.
Seventy per cent of the chickens would be bantams.
Danii Finlayson of TRW Developments of Warragul, acting on behalf of Mr Lewis, submitted that budgerigars and finches had now been removed from the proposal.
It was stated Mr Lewis is a member of the Warragul Poultry Club, has a hobby of keeping rare birds, takes in some rescue birds.
