3GG Celebrates 80th birthday

-

Radio 3GG has been an integral part of the Gippsland Community since launching on May 18, 1937. They are proud to be celebrating their 80th year in radio in Gippsland. Servicing West and South Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley, the primary station demographic is 40 plus; offering a ‘Forever Classic’ music format.

3GG was initially known as 3UL with their original license holder being Melbourne’s Argus Broadcasting Services. When Argus Broadcasting Services closed in 1957, Associated Broadcasting Services was developed to run 3UL.

Apart from stints in Traralgon and Morwell the station has been based in Warragul for most of their 80-year history. They operated from premises in Victoria Street for many years before relocating to Warragul-Korumburra Road in 1980. In 1989, the radio station changed name from 3UL to 3GG.

The station underwent another change of ownership in February 2015 and was purchased by Capital Radio Network.

The songs played on 3GG haven’t always been as clear as what they are now. With radio today, the songs and advertisements are all played by computers, this hasn’t always been the case. Back in the early days, announcers would play the records and tapes manually, resulting in the occasional mishap.

Radio 3GG has long standing ties with local communities throughout Gippsland, and is managed and operated by local people. In fact, the Station prides itself on its involvement with the community, and the standard of support it provides for local businesses and individuals alike.

3GG incorporates a mix of 70s, 80s & 90’ music, entertainment, plus news – along with regular community service announcements, local events sponsorship and pride themselves on keeping residents fully informed during all emergency situations. As well as Radio Market, which has been going almost as long as the station.

With a team of dedicated local staff on site in Gippsland, 3GG will always provide a prompt response to community information, news and advertisers needs.

Come along and celebrate 3GG’s 80th birthday as they broadcast live on Thursday, 18th May from 11am to 2pm at the corner of Smith and Victoria Streets, Warragul. Join Deaksy & the 3GG team, with heaps of prizes to giveaway.
