Millions of words sculpture

-

A sculpture with millions of words will be created in Civic Park, Warragul by four artists over two days.

The public is encouraged to watch the seldom seen process of creation as artists Jessie McLennan, Russell Lilford, Sue Acheson and Rebecca Vandyk utilise discarded books to make a sculpture this weekend.

With each of the artists experienced in both sculpture and performance, it will be quite a spectacle to watch.

Last year, as part of Creative Gippsland’s “Come and Play” Arts Festival, local artists created a painted, two-dimensional image while the public audience watched. This year, as part of the same Gippsland art celebration, the four artists will create a three-dimensional work in two days of frenzied “live art” making.

The artwork will be a comment on the icon of the book, as an expendable storehouse of words. It will also explore the concepts of waste, and easily-bought and discarded resources.

The theme, “too many words”, is a comment on the overuse of words and lack of action on important issues by those in power. To counteract this, there will be all action and no spoken words. The use of discarded books from owners and op-shops is a statement of the importance of recycling and finding other uses for discarded resources.

The sculpture will be green, created by green people on a green background - every action should be a considered as a challenge to people to minimise waste and over production in society, to be environmentally friendly.

Don’t miss this spectacle in Civic Park, Warragul on Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 4pm.
