- By Laurie Williams

Two trophies were up for grabs in Saturday’s sixth round of matches, Hill End and Boolarra battled it out for the Hambone Trophy while the Ron Skinner Memorial trophy was up for grabs between Newborough and Mirboo North. Hill End v Boolara Both Hill End and Boolarra amassed their highest tallies for the season in a match, where 31 goals were posted, both teams going hard to score.

The Hambone Trophy was up for grabs with Hill End taking advantage in both football and netball. Hill End now have doubled their win rate while Boolarra are sitting on the bottom yet to break the drought.

Hill End had to fight hard for their win, they were outpaced in the first half with Boolarra showing good patches of play, Chase Sanders a pivot up forward giving the Boolarra fans some hope for a win.

However a seven goal third term which was the best all year by the Hillmen blew Boolarra away, Michael Santo kicking accurately this week to post a match high six goals.

It’s looking grim for Boolarra going 0-6 and unless they can get wins on the board then it’s going to be a long season.

The final score was Hill End 1710 (112) to Boolarra 14-2 (86).

Michael Santo, Jeremy Cattanach and Bailey Young were the pick for Hill End while Jules Elson, Luke Conway and Chase Saunders with five goals were best for Boolarra, he now holds second position on the table with 20 goals. Morwell East v Yarragon Morwell East have now won three from six after beating Yarragon, the East winning in most positions, especially in the first term when they kept Yarragon scoreless.

The Panthers improved somewhat by half time and were behind by only five points.

It was a scramble as both teams tried to gain the advantage with Morwell East gaining ground as the match went on, an eight goal to three last half sewed up the match for the East running out comfortable winners 12-9 (81) to 7-4 (46).

Top goal kickers were Brayden Darby-Lock of Morwell East and Lachlan Fitzgerald of Yarragon with three each.

Ben Marks, Darren Tatterson and Bryce Chawner were best for the East while for Yarragon Brydon Price, Jake Green and Joel Wyatt were given the nod. Newborough v Mirboo North Newborough retained the Ron Skinner Memorial Trophy after their close-call against Mirboo North.

The Bulldogs escaping this week by five points after their seven pointer the previous week.

Newborough’s inaccuracy keeping Mirboo North in the game, a first quarter effort of five behinds would not have inspired coach Dean Caldow but the Dogs rallied, found their target in the second with a four-goal haul to go to a nine-point lead at half time.

Mirboo North clawed their way back into the match in the third to get within a goal at the break.

It was pressure football in the last with many packs developing as both tried to get an advantage, two goals each and it was down to minor scores which made the ultimate difference with Newborough winning 8-13 (61) to 8-8 (56).

Joshua Pearce was best with three goals for Newborough with Michael Hicks, Chris Hancock and Luke McQueen being all contributors. Mirboo North’s best were Jacob Nash, Jacob Blair and Joe Brooks.
