Teaching respect at Chairo
Respect is something that is deeply embedded into the culture at Chairo Christian School, with students expected to display respect and to behave appropriately at all times. They are taught that this responsibility extends beyond the school premises and beyond normal school hours.
The foundations for character development, positive relationships and productive learning at Chairo are defined by the school’s Code of Respect, which requires students to agree to respect others, themselves, authority and property — together with respecting the privilege to teach and learn, and respecting Chairo and its Christian foundations.
As part of respecting others, students are encouraged to value others for their individual differences and to treat everyone with care and consideration. They are educated to respect themselves by not only displaying good moral and ethical conduct but by being accountable for their actions and accepting the consequences of the choices they make.
Students are expected to respect authority by following school rules, policies and procedures, and by communicating their points of view respectfully. They are also taught to take pride in their school and to treat school property with care and gratitude.
An emphasis is placed on students respecting the privilege to teach and learn, which they can show in multiple ways, including by being punctual and properly prepared for classes. Students are also expected to respect Chairo and its Christian foundations by having a positive regard for the school’s Christian education, values and worldview.
Judy Linossier, Principal of the Drouin and Drouin East campuses, explained: “When students know what is expected of them, they are able to thrive within a secure environment. Working together in partnership, staff members and parents can send a message that education is important. They can help students develop positive attitudes to learning, and help them achieve to their full potential.”
