Huge round in junior football

It was a huge round in the Warragul and District Junior Football League last week, marked by the Bunyip and Garfield clash for the Riley Harris Cup on Friday night.

The battle of Drouin also took place, seeing mixed results from the Cobras and Jets.

The Warragul Blues also played off in their pink round, wearing pink socks and shorts to raise money for cancer charities.

Under 14

Garfield came out strong in the first couple of minutes against Bunyip, kicking a quick goal.

The second quarter saw more goals and some great team work.

Inaccurate kicking kept Bunyip in the contest but Garfield's quick running was the difference in the end.

Andrew Fitzpatric­k took the Riley Harris medallion for his efforts in the clash.

The two Drouin teams are always keen to play against each other on their home ground.

The Cobras kicked their first goals early, setting up a small leading margin.

Jets followed up with great pressure in fantastic contested football, holding the Cobras scoring in the second half. Cobras won with a comfortabl­e lead. Flynn Bethune and Cody Fleming were congratula­ted on reaching 100 games.

Longwarry played consistent­ly well, managing to smash out a score of 101 by the end of the game.

Neerim District also scored throughout the match, but couldn't match the rate the Crows were putting out.

Yarragon started well, but their kicking saw them only take a five point lead into the second quarter. From there Yarragon controlled the play. Hallora showed good signs, but there inconsiste­ncy left Yarragon to take the win.

The Colts squared off against Caldermead­e in a high-scoring clash.

The Warragul side nearly nailed a century by the time the final siren blew, overpoweri­ng the Cannons on the scoreboard.

The Blues started strong and didn't let up all game.

Warranor answered goal for goal but the Blues fought hard and came away with a well deserved win.

Under 12

It was a disappoint­ing loss for Bunyip in what was a hard fought game. The effort by all players is unquestion­able. Long kicking helped Garfield, getting them in front in the second quarter.

Bunyip came back, but the Stars fired up in the final quarter to win the game.

It was a quality match up between Ellinbank and the Bulls.

Ellinbank put in an incredible second quarter effort that would eventually seal them the win against the Poowong-Loch side.

It was a dominant display by the Warragul Colts, consistent­ly kicking goals from the outset.

The Cannons struggled to keep up, a lone point in the first quarter not enough to take on the score set by the Colts.

Yarragon had a very quick start with a few good goals early in the first quarter.

Hallora’s back line was working hard in the second, stopping a lot of play.

The third quarter saw Yarragon get another quick goal, but then Hallora fought back - not enough to Yarragon.

Liam Smith-Butterwort­h celebrated his 50 game milestone.

The Blues marched out against Warranor, opening scoring early in the first quarter.

It was a tight beginning to what was an uneven match in the end.

Warranor couldn't keep up with the pace that the Blues were setting, going down eventually.

The Jets looked powerful as they strutted their stuff against hometown rivals the Drouin Cobras.

It was a fantastic effort by the two sides, a late goal to the Cobras, not enough to match the Jets and their scoring onslaught.

Perfect conditions saw Longwarry dictate much of the play against Neerim District.

The Crows kept their field positions well and were rewarded handsomely, kicking their way through to a win. steal the points away from

Under 10

The Garfield Stars came to play against their arch rivals, Bunyip, on a beautiful and balmy Friday night.

Although the score was a bit one-sided, it was still a fantastic game put forward by both sides.

Bunyip got away to a great start with three goals in the first quarter.

It was a tough final quarter, the Stars finally managing a goal, but going down to the Bulldogs.

It was a lop-sided affair between Ellinbank and the Poowong-Loch Bulls.

Ellinbank started slow, letting the Bulls grow a two goal lead in the first quarter.

They then switched on, defending well, keeping the opposition scoring low.

In the end the Bulls were too strong, taking the win.

Colts hosted the Cannons for their pink day round.

The Caldermead­e side jumped out of the blocks to take the lead early.

The second quarter was a real fight by both teams.

In the third, Colts stepped up to their best quarter since playing as a team and it paid on the scoreboard.

In the end, the Cannon's first big quarter was too much for Colts to run down.

A very foggy morning in Yarragon made visibility difficult for everyone.

Hallora played well and fought hard taking the lead to a scoreless Yarragon.

Despite a great Yarragon defence, Hallora were just too strong, taking the win.

On pink day, the Blues hosted Warranor in a round to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Warranor did most of the attacking early, but the Blues held firm.

Goals were hard to get for the two sides, but Warranor were the eventual winners.

The clash of Drouin was a tense one, just over one goal the difference in the end.

In a scoreless first quarter, the Cobras managed to snag the lead in the second.

A strong third quarter saw the Jets get up and lead their way through to victory.

Longwarry opened well, the Crows managing to snag a few goals before half time.

Neerim had a refreshing break and came out firing, managing to bag a few goals of their own.

But, the early onslaught was too much on the scoreboard, winning Longwarry the game.
