Drouin won both A and D grades at Leongatha on Saturday. A grade: Drouin 59 defeated Leongatha 36. It was a very hard fought victory by the Hawks with the scoreline not representative of that battle that was held on court.

Drouin stood strong (with strong hands) with defensive pressure down the court snatching the game.

Kym Diston in goal keeper put her body on the line again, attacking the ball both inside and outside the circle. April Bethune also intercepted balls as goal defence.

Up the other end, Karina Proctor had a blitz of a game, coming up trumps from wherever she goaled. Goal attack Stacie Gardiner got some long bomb passes from Christie Edwards right under the post. Awards: Karina Proctor and Kym Diston. B grade: Drouin 44 lost to Leongatha 59. The girls played a good game but were beaten by a better side. Jemyma Leishout found some good form early in goal attack, working hard and presenting on top of the circle. Goaling alongside her was Kylie Proctor; who hardly missed a shot or a play to steady the team.

Kelly Hedley went into wing attack in the second quarter which made a difference. As a group, they were unable to get enough turnovers against an accurate and quick Leongatha side. Award: Kylie Proctor. C grade: Drouin 28 lost to Leongatha 49. The Hawks had a fantastic start, only down by three goals at quarter time. Unfortunately, they couldn’t keep up the momentum.

Abbey Tyrrell moved brilliantly in and around the ring. Together with Emily Bethune, they shot accurately.

In defence, Abbey Craig worked hard and was rewarded with both possessions and some killer drives down the court. Jess Murray as wing defence managed some great intercepts.

Coming on for some fresh legs was under 15 player Alana Rippon. She played on one of the toughest/oldest Leongatha players at some crucial moments and showed how tough (and fit) she is.

Awards: Abbey Tyrrell, Abby Craig and Alana Rippon.

Under 17s: Drouin 37 defeated Leongatha 32.

There is something to be said for fast netball, but not at the cost of accuracy. The first half was erratic and a flurry of quick, and perhaps wrong, decisions. The defenders were chasing their players, rather than dictating what they should do.

After a pep talk and refocus at half-time, the Hawks went back to the game plan – and the score soon reflected it. Georgia Henderson came into wing attack in the fourth quarter as a wonderful steady head. Award: Georgia Henderson Under 15s: Drouin 35 lost to Leongatha 43. It was a fantastic game by the girls, one of their best yet. Some outstanding one-on-one defence, especially in the midcourt by Macy Newcombe, slowed the opposition and enabled the defenders to take some great intercepts.

Ella Gown displayed some impressive footwork and speed, resulting in repeated turnovers. The goalers Olivia Konstanty and Brook DeRiter combined beautifully. Awards: Ella Gown and Brooke DeRiter. Under 13s: Drouin 4 lost to Leongatha 48. Scoring from the first centre pass is a great way to start a game. For the first time this season, that is exactly what the Hawks did.

Some accurate passing and the perfect execution of the system they have been practicing, showed how much they’ve already learnt.

This was the team’s best performance, scoring more goals than ever. The girls are stepping up to the challenge of the league and facing it head on with determination and courage.
