Catani’s win secures second spot

-

There were several key results in the Ellinbank and District league and a couple in Mid Gippsland.

Catani is now a clear second in the EDFL after storming home in the final quarter to upset Ellinbank that has dropped to third spot.

The Bankers led by more than four goals at the half time and three-quarter breaks but were swamped by the finish of Catani that got it home by seven points.

Wins by Longwarry and Nilma-Darnum have them outside the “five” by percentage only.

They’ve joined Buln Buln, that Longwarry downed by 51 points on Saturday, on four wins and have set up a strong battle for 5th spot over the rest of the season.

Nilma-Darnum took its foot off the pedal a bit in the last term but had the game against Lang Lang well won by then and top of the ladder Neerim Neerim South had too many guns for Nyora.

On Sunday, as expected, Warragul Industrial proved far too strong for Poowong to strengthen its place in the top group.

The fight for the MGFL “five” and the eventual finishing order tightened further.

Mirboo North continued its push to now sit just one game out of the “five” after scoring a good 12-18 to 6-11 win against Thorpdale that has slipped to fourth but is only one game behind joint leaders Yinnar, Yallourn Yallourn North and Newborough.

In the match of the round Yallourn reversed the result of the early season meeting winning by 26 points.

Trafalgar won its neighbour rivalry clash with Yarragon to retain 5th place, a game ahead of Mirboo North and Morwell East that got the points over Hill End.

In Gippsland League Moe scored a crucial win against Morwell, its 6th from nine games, to strengthen its hold on 4th spot.

Morwell stayed in the “five” but have Bairnsdale and Wonthaggi Power, both winners on Saturday, and Warragul breathing down its neck.

Bairnsdale gave its percentage an important boost with a big win at home against Drouin and Wonthaggi Power toppled Sale.

Warragul lowered its colours in its Western Park clash with Traralgon, the Gulls were still in with a chance at the last break but were blown away by eight Traralgon goals while failing to score themselves.

Traralgon reclaimed top place on the ladder after Leongatha fell at Maffra.

Things went pretty much according to script in the West Gippsland league.

However Kilcunda-Bass had a real battle on its hands to overcome Koo wee rup 11-11 to 11-5.

Inverloch-Kongwak and Cora Lynn had solid wins against Korumburra-Bena and Nar Nar Goon respectively while Garfield was a comfortable winner over neighbour Bunyip that continues to search for its first win.

Dalyston, one of the main premiership contenders, pushed aside Phillip Island in their clash on Sunday.
